Why Do You Need To Write Articles?

In the world of Internet Marketing we've all heard that it's a good thing to write articles and submit them to different article directories to help generate links. Well, I'm here to say that it works... but, there's a bit more to it than "just go write something and post it.
Let me start with what I mean by "Articles". To me, an article is a useful (and meaningful) piece of information in written form. An article is about communication. It is about teaching someone else something they didn't know. An article should be clearly written and well structured. I'm not talking pulitzer prize material here but if your article looks like a third grader's first attempt at an essay, you might want to put some more work into it. However, rather than get sidetracked with good writing technique, I'll get back to the big picture. (If you are interested in learning more about good writing techniques, there are additional articles at JaegerTrade.com.) For now, we'll assume that you know how to write well.
When you write an article and submit it to one of the article directories, you are giving them the right to publish AND distribute your article. And that's exactly what you want them to do! Almost all of the directories state in their Terms of Service' that the author biography or Signature block MUST remain intact when someone publishes your article on their site. And, your signature block is where you put the link back to your site. So the more people that grab your article for their site, the more links you will have back to YOUR site. The better your article is, the more it will get used on other sites (yes, I know... I'm back to the well written article thing again)
So lets say that you write one article and it gets used on 20 different sites, that's 20 links back to your site. Take it a step further, you write 20 articles and they each get used on 20 different sites... now you have 400 links back to your site! As you get better and quicker at writing quality articles, you might wind up with hundreds of articles which translates into thousands of links back to your site.
Now, why are all these links to your site so important? Because that's one of the factors that the Search Engines use to determine how important your site is. The more important the search engines think your site is, the better your chances of being on the First Page when someone searches for one of your keywords rather than on page 109 where NOBODY will every find you.
That's ONE good reason for writing articles. If you're trying to make money on the internet, you need traffic. To get traffic, you need to be well ranked in the search engines and have links back to your site from other high traffic sites. If you write interesting, high quality articles that help the reader learn something AND make them curious for more... they will follow the links to see what else you've got. If you write junk, well... there's already plenty of that out there. Contribute to the community where you want to make your living, contribute quality to the net.
